How to Reset a Check Engine Light

Check engine light for Land Rover

The check engine light came on, and now it won’t shut off. It happens. Most of the time there is nothing wrong, and the pesky Land Rover warning light just won’t go away. If you want to learn how to do a check engine light reset, follow this handy guide from the service experts at our service center near Philadelphia.

Handling a Check Engine Light Reset

When any problems arise, it’s essential to get them taken care of at our West Chester service center before any other major issues happen. Schedule a service appointment right from home and our factory-trained technicians will make sure that your vehicle continues performing at its best and that it’s safe for the Exton roads.

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

If there are no issues with your Land Rover vehicle, manually resetting your check engine light is the next best option. This may sound incredibly daunting if you’re not familiar with what’s under the hood of your car, but it’s fairly easy! Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the ignition, and put on a pair of safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Locate the negative terminal. It usually has a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. For reference, the positive cap is red and will have a positive (+) symbol.
  3. Loosen the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench, then pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it to the side for 30 – 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it back up with your wrench.

This should do the trick! If it doesn’t, contact our service center!

Check Your Gas Cap

You can also check your gas cap, as a loose or cracked gas cap causes fumes to release, which sometimes causes the engine light to illuminate. After parking safely, remove your gas cap and put it right back on. If it doesn’t work right away, follow the steps above to disconnect the battery. You should be all set!
