How to Unlock a Steering Wheel

Evoque steering wheel and interior

Many drivers lock their steering wheel without noticing it until they try to turn on their car and head out on the road. If you are having any problems starting your Land Rover car or if the key won’t turn in the ignition, there’s a chance that your steering wheel is locked. Don’t fret –  this often happens by accident and is easy to fix! Learn how to unlock a steering wheel from our Land Rover service experts who know your vehicle inside and out.

Unlocking a Steering Wheel: Step-by-Step Guide

Unlocking a steering wheel is easy, and it can be done in these quick and easy steps:

  1. Pull the wheel down in the same direction you did when the wheel was originally locked.
  2. Not sure which direction you need to pull? Try both — the wheel should move a bit when it’s pulled in the right direction.
  3. While holding your steering wheel in the right direction, insert your key into the ignition, and start the engine.
  4. If the wheel doesn’t unlock and/or the engine doesn’t start, turn the wheel in the other direction and repeat the above step.

Your steering wheel should now be unlocked!

Tips to Keep in Mind When Unlocking a Steering Wheel

In order to unlock your steering without damaging anything, consider the following:

  • Do Not Use Brute Force: You can’t use brute force to unlock a locked steering wheel; in fact, this could damage parts of the steering mechanism. It’s best to follow the steps above while applying pressure.
  • Try a Different Key: If you’re still having some trouble, the issue could be the key itself — not the steering wheel. The key may be worn and can no longer engage the car’s tumblers. If you suspect a problem with your key, the Land Rover West Chester parts department can make you a new one.

How to Lock Your Steering Wheel & Why

Locking your steering wheel has its benefits. If you’re leaving your car in an unfamiliar area, you may want an extra level of security. This can make it more difficult for someone who shouldn’t be at the wheel to start your car. To lock your steering wheel intentionally, follow these quick and easy steps:

  1. Turn off your car, and take the keys out of the ignition.
  2. Turn the steering wheel one way or the other until you hear a click.

Your steering wheel will now be locked until you return. When you’re ready to depart again, simply unlock the steering wheel, and start your car.
